For many decades after the original Nazism was defeated in Europe, Spain was still in a firm grip of clearly fascist government of Caudillo Franko. May be that is the reason that once out of that grip Spanish Constitution has a provision of Article 20 (Articulo 20) that allows a freedom of speech - even to the Spanish military. In American "democracy" there is no such freedom for the armed forces. Maybe, that is why we will never hear from an American military any truth, any time soon.

So, let us enjoy this rare occasion and learn more about the NATO bombing raids against Yugoslavia and the role of Americans in making all decisions.

The Spanish pilots of fighter planes admit that NATO attacks civilian targets

The Spanish original follows.

The pilots of Spanish planes who participated in bombing raids against Yugoslavia do not feel like "supermen" nor as masters of air space. Quite on the contrary, they say that our forces play to the tune of music played by the North Americans, and accuse NATO of having honored with medals the bombing of civilian targets, what they otherwise name "collateral damages". Captain Adolfo Luis Martin de la Hoz, who returned to Spain end of May after having participated in the bombings since the beginning, an "authentic expert for the dreadful F-18", the war plane most often used in the war strategy of "scorched land" in the Balkans, is very categorical:

"First of all, I want to make it clear that the majority, I say the majority, of my colleagues, even if not all, are against the war in general and against this war of barbarity in particular." Martin de la Hoz says that he and his colleagues "are burnt out". "Since a few days ago there appeared in the papers certain statements of the commander Maches Michavilla, who is now in the air base at Aviano with the pilots who replaced us, in which he said that our worst enemy in the air was our mental and physical health.

But I tell you that our worst enemies are our own authorities, the Defense Minister and his whole team, the members of the Government, who know nothing about war and go along with it without informing themselves about anything and, what is gravest, are guilty of lying to the Spanish people through the papers, radio and television, foreign correspondents and press agencies."

The suspicions that NATO's repeated bombings of civilian victims and non-military targets are not the result of war "errors", are confirmed by Captain Martin de la Hoz: "Several times our Colonel protested to NATO commanders why they select targets which are not military targets. They threw him out with curses saying that we should know that the North Americans will lodge a complaint by the Spanish Army, once through Brussels and again by the Defence Minister. But there is more, and I want to tell it to the whole world: once there was a coded order of the North American military that we should drop anti-personnel bombs over the localities of Prishtina and Nish. The colonel refused it altogether and, a couple of days later, the transfer order came. But what I say now is nothing compared to what I shall have to say when the time comes."

The Spanish military denounces that "the Spanish Government not only does not try to inform themselves but they also accept the false reports that are edited for them in Aviano, where there is a sort of military press cabinet in the hands of North American generals and function aries. Ever since we arrived in Italy - the Captain goes on - there is no end to humiliations and insults. The order givers are only the North American generals, and no one else. We are zeroes, just as our replacements are going to be. But there is still more to that. Here they say that several operations were directed by Spanish commanders and pilots. Lies over lies. All the missions that we flew, all and each one, were planned by US high military authorities. Even more, they were all planned in detail, including attacking planes, targets and type of ammunition that we have to throw. We never directed anything, and our missions were limited to flying over the borders of Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Slovakia."

Government's lies

None of the pilots presently stationed at Aviano, who replaced those who went to the Italian base a little before the start of war, last March 23, were there with clean conscience, says the Spanish military. "It is being written to saturation that the disciplined and patriotic Spanish pilots according to Minister Eduardo Serra - are concentrating on the complexity of their war missions". But we read so many discrepancies, so many lies that we agreed to not read a single newspaper until we return. Our anger is enormous.

The President of the Government, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Defense Minister are lying brazenly each time they talk about the war. Some of us are of another opinion and believe they do not inform themselves, because the North Americans - the White House, the Pentagon, the CIA, the Embassy or military information service, whoever, do not inform them about anything. How should they inform themselves if our own Javier Solana has not informed himself since the war broke out? Solana is a puppet who has been put there by the Yankees to do what they tell him he has to do. And so he does, standing straight before General Clark when he talks to him, or better said, when he issues him the orders that he has to implement without delay."

On the subject of manipulation of information about the war, Captain de la Hoz says that "no one has said anything about the incidents that took place in Aviano, about the disastrous maintenance of Spanish machinery, and above all about the constant humiliations to which we were subjected from the beginning. Not that we were cannon food. No. We were nothing. About the fatal accidents, the losses suffered without connection to combat, the contempt and sanctions, not a word. From no one!"

For the wrong selection of targets and humiliations the Spanish militaries are ever more certain that there is no alibi. "We know perfectly well that we are intervening in a conflict - says Martin de la Hoz - which is rejected by the majority of the Spanish people and this is most important for us. But what they do not say in any information, commentary or speech, is that the Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese ... that we are there to cover up the North American generals who are dealing and wheeling in the war. There is no journalist who has the slightest idea what is happening in Yugoslavia.

They are destroying the country, bombing it with novel weapons, toxic nerve gases, surface mines dropped with parachute, bombs containing uranium, black napalm, sterilization chemicals, sprayings to poison the crops and weapons of which even we still do not know anything. The North Americans are committing one of the biggest barbarities that can be committed against humanity. A lot of very bad things will be told in the future about what was happening there, because, by the way, judging by what we talked about with the British and German officers, it was designed in order to divide the Europeans and keep us subjected for many decades.

Therefore, Captain Martin de la Hoz is enraged when there are talks about the costs of the war. There should be no doubt, he confirms that the militaries detached in Aviano are receiving bonuses which are "five times our salary", without counting daily expenses and other prerequisites.

We could say that we should be satisfied with what this war means economically for each one of us, but it is not true, what they give us is the chocolate for the parrots. This war is going to cost the Spaniards more than all money allocated for culture in the last five years. And how, even if now no one says anything because of the elections, it will be evident in a few months and will be felt in our pockets. Because this brutal solely Yankees' war, no one's but Yankees', is going to be paid by all of us. Be sure that what I say is not to exculpate myself and to intone 'mea culpa' for having participated in it, because I will never be able to forget that what was being committed there was one the biggest savageries of history."

Pilotos de caza españoles admiten que la OTAN ataca objetivos civiles

Los pilotos de los aviones españoles que han participado en el bombardeo contra Yugoslavia no se sienten "supermanes" ni señores del aire. Todo lo contrario, dicen que están en contra de esta guerra, en la que nuestras fuerzas hacen una labor de comparsas de la música que tocan los norteamericanos, y denuncian que la OTAN, desde el principio del conflicto, ha dado órdenes de bombardear objetivos civiles, lo que luego llamaban "efectos colaterales".

El capitán Adolfo Luis Martín de la Hoz, que volvió a finales de mayo a España después de participar en los bombardeos desde el comienzo del conflicto, un "auténtico experto en el temible F-18", el avión de guerra más utilizado en la política bélica de "tierra quemada" en los Balcanes, es muy tajante: "En primer lugar, quiero dejar bien claro que la mayoría, digo la mayoría, de mis compañeros, aunque no todos, están contra la guerra en general y contra esta guerra de barbarie en particular".

Martín de la Hoz dice que él y sus compañeros "están quemados".. "Hace unos días aparecían en los periódicos unas declaraciones del comandante Machés Michavilla, que ahora está en la base italiana de Aviano con los pilotos que nos han sustituido a nosotros, en las que decía que nuestro mayor contrincante en el aire era la salud mental y física. Pero yo le digo que nuestros mayores enemigos son nuestros propios mandos, el ministro de Defensa y todo su equipo, los miembros del Gobierno, que no saben nada de la guerra y siguen sin enterarse de nada y, lo que es más grave, son culpables de mentir al pueblo español a través de los periódicos, la radio y la televisión, los corresponsales extranjeros y las agencias informativas".

Las sospechas de que los reiterados bombardeos de la OTAN contra víctimas civiles y objetivos no militares, no son producto de "errores" bélicos, son confirmadas por el capitán Martín de la Hoz: "Varias veces nuestro coronel protestó ante los jefes de la OTAN porque señalaban objetivos que no eran militares. Lo despedían con cajas destempladas y, que nosotros sepamos, los norteamericanos reprendieron a nuestro Ejército, unas veces a través de Bruselas y otras ante el ministro de Defensa.

Pero hay más, y esto quiero decirlo a los cuatro vientos: en un momento determinado, una orden cifrada de los militares norteamericanos nos mandaba que lanzáramos bombas antipersonas sobre los desplazados de Pristina y Nis. El coronel se negó en redondo y, pocas jornadas después, llegaba el oficio de traslado. Lo que digo ahora no es nada para lo que tendré que decir en su momento".

El militar español denuncia que "el Gobierno español no sólo no se entera de nada, sino que está a la zaga de falsos acontecimientos que les dan redactados en Aviano, donde funciona una especie de gabinete de prensa militar en manos de generales y funcionarios norteamericanos. Desde que llegamos a Italia -sigue el capitán- las humillaciones y ofensas no han cesado. Allí sólo mandan los generales norteamericanos, sólo ellos y nadie más que ellos. Nosotros somos un cero a la izquierda, como lo van a ser los que nos han sustituido. Pero aún hay más cosas. Aquí han declarado que el mando y los pilotos españoles han dirigido varias operaciones. Mentiras sobre mentiras. Todas las misiones que hemos realizado nosotros, todas y cada una, han sido planificadas por los altos mandos militares estadounidenses. Más aún, todas vienen planificadas, con los planes de ataque, objetivos y tipo de munición que debemos lanzar. Jamás hemos dirigido nada, y nuestras misiones se han limitado a sobrevolar las fronteras de Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia y Eslovaquia".

Mentiras del Gobierno

Ninguno de los pilotos que ahora están asentados en Aviano, y que sustituyeron a los que partieron hacia la base italiana poco antes del inicio de la guerra, el pasado 23 de marzo, fueron allí con ánimos redentores, dice el militar español. "Se ha escrito hasta la saciedad que los pilotos españoles disciplinados y patrióticos, -según el ministro Eduardo Serra- tienen sus mentes ocupadas en la complejidad de sus misiones de guerra". Pero hemos leído tantos disparates y tantas mentiras que acordamos no leer ni un solo periódico hasta que volviéramos. El cabreo que tenemos es mayúsculo. El presidente del Gobierno, el ministro de Asuntos Exteriores y el ministro de Defensa mienten descaradamente cada vez que dicen una palabra sobre la guerra. Algunos de nosotros tenemos otra opinión y pensamos que no se enteran de nada, porque los norteamericanos -la Casa Blanca, el Pentágono, la CIA, la embajada o los servicios de información militares, los que sean, no les informan de nada. ¿Cómo quiere que se enteren si el propio Javier Solana no se ha aclarado desde que empezó la guerra? Solana es un pelele al que han puesto ahí los yankis para que haga lo que le dicen que tiene que hacer. Así hace, poniéndose firmes ante el general Clark cuando le habla, o, mejor dicho, cuando le da órdenes para que las cumpla sin rechistar". Sobre la manipulación de la información sobre la guerra, el capitán Martín de la Hoz dice que "nadie ha dicho nada de los accidentes que se han producido en Aviano, del desastre en el mantenimiento de los aparatos españoles, sobre todo, y de las humillaciones permanentes a las que nos han sometido desde el principio. No es que seamos carne de cañón. No. Es que no somos nada. Sobre los accidentes mortales, bajas sufridas ajenas a los combates, desprecios y sanciones, no han dicho ni una sola palabra. ¡Nadie!".

A la falta de objetivos y las humillaciones se une en los militares españoles la certeza de que no tienen coartada. "Sabemos perfectamente que estamos interviniendo en un conflicto -dice Martín de la Hoz- que rechaza la mayoría de los españoles y eso para nosotros es lo más importante. Pero lo que no se dice en ninguna información, comentario o tertulia, es que españoles, holandeses, portugueses... estamos allí para dar cobertura frente a la galería a los generales norteamericanos, que son los que hacen y deshacen en la guerra. No hay ningún comentarista que tenga la menor idea de lo que está pasando en Yugoslavia. Están machacando el país, bombardeándolo con nuevas armas, gases tóxicos enervantes, minas de superficie que se lanzan con paracaídas, bombas de uranio, napalm negro, rizales de esterilización, lanzaderas para envenenar los cultivos y armas que ni nosotros conocemos todavía. Los norteamericanos están haciendo allí una de las mayores barbaridades que se pueden cometer contra la humanidad. Mucho y muy mal se hablará en el futuro de lo que allí está ocurriendo, porque, además, según hemos hablado con mandos británicos y alemanes, fue diseñada para machacar a los europeos y tenernos sometidos durante muchas décadas".

Por eso, el capitán Martín de la Hoz se indigna cuando se habla de los costes de la guerra. Para que no haya dudas, confirma que los militares destacados en Aviano cobran unas primas que "multiplican por cinco nuestros emolumentos, sin considerar dietas y otros gastos. Podríamos decir que deberíamos estar contentos con lo que esta guerra significa económicamente para cada uno de nosotros, pero no es verdad, lo que nos dan es el chocolate del loro.

Esta guerra les va a costar a los españoles más que todo el dinero presupuestado para Cultura en los últimos cinco años. Y como habrá que pagarla, aunque ahora no diga nadie nada por lo de las elecciones, verá como dentro de unos meses se resienten nuestros bolsillos. Porque esta guerra brutal de los yanquis, sólo de los yanquis, y de nadie más que de los yanquis, la tendremos que pagar todos nosotros. Que conste que con lo que digo no trato de exculparme y de entonar el mea culpa por haber participado en ella, porque nunca podré olvidar que allí se está cometiendo una de las mayores salvajadas de la historia".
